This is a VR application for the Treatment of Claustrophobia: VIRTUAL OPENOUT 2000

- Claustrophobia:

This is a CD-ROM of VR technology whose virtual scenarios provide different difficulty levels for persons afraid of closed spaces. Basically, there are two rooms with several degrees of openness, and an elevator with different options of functioning.

  ScreenShots

"Before entering the elevator I said to myself "It's OK, nothing is gonna happen to you. Relax". However, I couldn't help to start feeling sick. My mouth ran dry, my heart sped up... those cold chills and the sensation of suffocation. I couldn't help but thinking "What if I cannot get out? I will run out of air, nobody will hear me". I couldn't endure it, so again, I fled shaking and ashamed"

Claustrophobia is an intense to closed spaces. When the person anticipates they are going to be in a closed spaced, they experience an anxiety reaction (lack of air, palpitations, dizziness, etc.). That is the reason why they try to avoid elevators, tunnels, the subway, small rooms, etc. The person is not afraid of the situation itself, but of the possible negative consequences of being in that place.

Between a 2% and a 5% of the general population suffers from claustrophobia. Its onset is normally associated to an unpleasant experience in a closed space (for instance, being trapped in an elevator). Nonetheless, it can also be acquired indirectly, hearing about others' unpleasant experiences or seeing another person having such an experience (Rachman, 1977).
