Flying Phobia is an increasing problem in
industrialized countries. Approximately a 10% of the
general population never takes a plane due to their
intense fear of flying. Another 25% experience great
anxiety when flying and, often, they depend on alcohol
or pills to endure the flight. Anxiety is not limited
to actual flight, but spread to the previous moments,
such as when the person knows he/she has to take a plane
(which could be not only days but months in advance),
and any

situation related to the trip (going to a travel
agency, booking the tickets, going to the airports,
etc.). Interference in social and working life
may carry distressing consequences to the persons
that repeatedly avoid using this mean of transport.
Curiously, however, this fear does not correspond
to air transport safety levels. Data from the

Statistics (1985) are revealing: air travel is :
- 29 times safer than travelling by car
- 18 times safer than being at home
- 10 times safer that being at work
- 8 times safer that walking down the streets
- 4 times safer than travelling by train
Treatment is aimed to any person that finds impossible
to take a plane due to their intense anxiety, or to
those that actually fly but feeling highly distressed
due to their fear.
