What is the Binge Eating disorder?
The Binge Eating Disorder is characterized by the presence
of continuous gorging of food sessions. A binge-eating episode
is recognized because the person is ingesting a large amount
of food (generally foods with a high caloric content) while
they experience a sensation of loss of control.
Binge
eating behaviors are brought about, generally, by negative
emotional states, such as depression, loneliness, boredom,
etc. Besides the gorging sessions, certain behavior related
to food is associated with this problem, such as eating
very rapidly, eating in secret, hidden away from others,
eating until one feels very full, eating large quantities
of food throughout the day without planning for meal times,
eating large quantitities without being hungry, which all
lead feeling guilty, feeling depressed, and even self-degrading
oneself("you can't stop eating", "you'll
always be a fatso", "you're going to explode").
These circumstances can bring about substantial fluctuations
in weight and a reactive obesity, especially in persons
with a tendency to be overweight. It is not infrequent that
these persons have made repeated attempts to diet to lose
weight.
The main worry of these people who suffer from this problem
is related to a lack of control in relation to food, and
for the effects that the gorging sessions can have on a
long-term basis on their figures and on their weight, which
ends up affecting the confidence that they have in themselves
in relationships with others.
You may be reading these lines because you identify yourself
with the description of this problem. The following questions
track the presence of some of the typical aspects of the
Binge Eating Disorder, taking into account that this does
not in any way substitute the process of assessment carried
out to establish a clinical diagnosis, but rather represents
a first approach to and a preliminary exploration of the
problem.
If in addition the people around you mention to you that
your personality has changed, that you are more irritable
with others, it is possible that you have problems that
could develop into an Eating Disorder such as the Binge
Eating Disorder. But remember: this is only an approximation
to the process of evaluation which is necessary before initiating
any treatment. If you think you might have this problem,
consult a health care professional so that you can decide
if you wish to receive treatment.
